Is Urban Heat Island intensity higher during hot spells and heat waves (Dijon, France, 2014–2019)?

چکیده
The Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon is frequently associated with heat waves, both in scientific literature and the media. Health problems other issues often result from co-occurrence of these two phenomena. Previous studies have not yet provided sufficient evidence to validate potential links between UHIs waves. MUSTARDijon network was set up 2014, Dijon, France. Its spatial density (60 sensors) temporal depth (6 summers) provide information about several Hot Spells Waves (HSH conditions are met during HS&HW, but systematically. By contrast, can be fulfilled even without high temperatures. Strong thus develop outside Spell/Heat Wave (HS/HW) events. These HS&HW necessarily phase UHIs: maximum UHI intensity tends occur before onset or first few days HS&HW. decreases because nocturnal urban temperature generally remains stationary, whereas rural increase at night. hypothesis proposed that this night could linked decrease Actual Evapotranspiration (ETa) soil wetness.

Urban Heat Island Intensification during Hot Spells—The Case of Paris during the Summer of 2003
Heat waves are projected to become more frequent, longer-lasting, and intense. At the same time, urban areas are confronted with the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon, which adds to the thermal stress experienced during hot spells. Focusing on the Paris area during the hot summer of 2003, we investigated the influence of heat waves on UHI intensity, i.e., the urban-rural temperature contrast. ...
متن کاملVulnerability to heat waves: Impact of urban expansion scenarios on urban heat island and heat stress in Paris (France)
Heat-wave risk in cities is determined both by regional climate evolutions and by cities size and shape change, because they can impact heat island effect. Land planning and urban transport policies, due to their long-lasting impact on cities shape, can therefore play a role in heat-wave risk mitigation. However, the link between these policies and resulting change in urban heat island is far f...
متن کاملHeat Waves and Hot Environments
Hot weather is an important determinant of human mortality. In the United States, a major heat wave can cause literally thousands of excess deaths in a given summer. Yet, for purposes of public health, the term "heat wave" is not easily defined. "Hot" is a relative term, and periods of hot weather (heat waves) vary greatly in intensity and duration. Ambient temperatures may change rapidly, and ...

We are all familiar with the fact that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. We see it referenced most nights in our television weather reports.
